Mindowaskin Park is a 12.6-acre public park on East Broad Street in Westfield, NJ, beside the Municipal Building. It has an accessible playground, a pond, walking paths, gardens and a gazebo. The Town’s posted park policies say there are no bathroom facilities in the park.

Its location makes Mindowaskin an easy park to work into a downtown outing. You can plan around the playground, take a quiet walk near the pond or pause between errands. A little preparation helps, particularly if you are bringing young children or arranging photographs with a group.

To build a full afternoon around the park, see my guide to things to do in Westfield, with restaurants, downtown shops, indoor activities and suggested outings.

Information checked November 2, 2026 against the Town’s park page, park policies and current Recreation guidance. The cover is an archival photograph. Follow posted signs and any temporary notices during your visit.

Where is Mindowaskin Park, and how do I get there?

Mindowaskin sits just north of downtown on East Broad Street, next to Westfield’s Municipal Building at 425 East Broad Street. The Town’s 2024 Environmental Resource Inventory also identifies access from Park Drive at North Euclid Avenue and Mountain Avenue.

Open Mindowaskin Park directions using the map linked by the Town. Choose the park as your destination; the Recreation Department’s office address is a contact location, not a description of every park entrance.

Where can I park?

The Town’s inventory lists parking areas within the park. Use marked spaces and follow signs on the park drives and surrounding streets. The Mindowaskin policies specifically warn that the nearby Presbyterian Church parking lot is private property and that commercial vehicles may not park on park property or Park Drive.

If you are combining the park with a downtown visit, decide where you will park for the whole outing before unloading a stroller or picnic. A space that works for a short stop may have a time limit that does not suit a longer visit. My Westfield parking guide explains the separate rules for downtown and station parking.

What is the Mindowaskin Park playground like?

The Town describes Mindowaskin’s playground as accessible. The park also has memorial trees, gardens and a gazebo, so a visit can include time away from the play area without moving to another destination.

For families, a simple plan is to begin at the playground, follow the paths toward the pond and leave time for a final stop before heading home. Keep children close near the water and when crossing park drives. Bring what your family needs for the visit rather than assuming every amenity will be available.

If a particular mobility need will determine whether the trip works, contact Recreation at 908-789-4080 about the route from parking to the playground and any temporary access restrictions. The Town’s accessible-playground description does not document every path, surface or parking space.

Does Mindowaskin Park have bathrooms?

The Town’s posted Mindowaskin policies state that there are no bathroom facilities in the park. Plan a restroom stop before arriving, especially with younger children. Do not assume a nearby public building or private business will be open or provide restroom access during your visit. See the Town’s park-use policies.

What are Mindowaskin Park’s hours?

Westfield’s public-property ordinance generally prohibits remaining on Town public land between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., with exceptions for authorized activities. Posted hours and more restrictive park rules control. Check the signs at your entrance rather than treating an online listing as permission to stay after closing.

Is Mindowaskin good for walking?

Yes. Walking paths and the pond are central features of Mindowaskin. The Town’s park inventory identifies it as a passive park with trails, a playground, a gazebo and a pond. It suits a short walk or a park stop as part of a downtown visit.

For an unhurried family outing, allow time to explore rather than trying to cover a particular distance. Start with the activity your children most want to do, take a pond walk when they are ready for a change, and finish while everyone still has energy for the walk back to the car.

For a larger park outing, read my Tamaques Park guide and redesign update. For summer swimming, Memorial Pool is a separate facility with its own membership and admission arrangements.

Do I need a permit for photos, a wedding or the gazebo?

Contact Westfield Recreation before arranging a photography session, ceremony, class or organized event at Mindowaskin. The Town requires permits for photography and other reserved uses. Reserving an area does not close the entire park to the public. The park’s use policies also prohibit attaching decorations to structures and using open flames.

Start with the current facility rental instructions, which direct requests through Civic Rec. Residents may request dates up to 120 days ahead; non-residents may request up to 60 days ahead. Requests less than seven days before the event are not accepted. Approved reservations require liability insurance under the Town’s stated conditions.

Ask Recreation to confirm the fee, available area and insurance requirements for your specific use before hiring a photographer or inviting guests. An older Mindowaskin policy sheet and the current general rental schedule are both online; a quote from the department is more useful than assuming an old gazebo price applies to every reservation.

What improvements are happening at Mindowaskin in 2026?

In its September 25, 2026 update, the Town reported that restoration of all 65 park benches had begun. Replacement slats were being installed first on benches near the bandstand, with work expected to continue around the park over several months.

The same update said the Town was assuming responsibility for this work and ongoing park maintenance, previously handled by the Friends of Mindowaskin Park. That announcement describes a bench restoration project; it does not announce a park-wide closure or a playground reopening date.

For current conditions or a reservation question, call Westfield Recreation at 908-789-4080. If you notice a maintenance problem, report the exact location through Westfield Connect so staff can find it.
