The Westfield Conservation Center is at 1300 Lamberts Mill Road. Westfield residents can drop off accepted recyclables for free; yard waste and household bulk waste have separate permit rules. During the fall 2026 schedule, the Center is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except for listed closures and weather interruptions.

A trip to the Center is easier when you sort out two things before leaving home: what you’re bringing and whether it needs a permit. A trunk of cardboard, a load of branches and an old sofa are three different trips as far as the rules are concerned. Here’s how to plan yours.

Information checked October 29, 2026. Fees and hours below are for 2026. Check the Town’s Conservation Center page for weather closures or changes before you go.

What are the Conservation Center’s hours?

The 2026 Conservation Center mailer sets out the seasonal calendar. For October 13 through December 20, 2026:

  • Monday–Friday: 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
  • Upcoming holiday closures: November 11, November 26 and November 27.
  • Year-end closure: December 21, 2026–January 1, 2027.

These are fall hours. Check the calendar again before a winter or spring visit; the Center does not keep the same schedule all year.

Do I need a permit, and how much does it cost?

Use the material you’re disposing of to choose the permit. The following are the 2026 Westfield resident fees in the town’s mailer:

Westfield resident disposal options in 2026
What you’re bringingPermit or charge
Accepted recyclablesFree; no permit
Organic yard waste$60 seasonal permit
Household bulk waste by car$40 single-use permit
Household bulk waste by SUV$60 single-use permit
Household bulk waste by pickup truck$80 single-use permit
Mattress or box spring$35 per item; separate single-use permit

Bulk charges can increase with the size of the load. Buy permits online through the link on the official Conservation Center page; permits are not sold at the facility.

Non-residents have different fees. The town currently lists $35 for an annual recycling permit, $120 for organic waste, or $145 for a combined recycling and organic-waste permit. Check the applicable permit before making a trip from another town.

What can Westfield residents recycle for free?

The Center accepts more than the materials in a typical curbside bin. Examples include dry cardboard, household electronics, clothing, books in readable condition, plastic bags and film, and clean #5 plastic containers. Food scraps have a separate drop-off program. The town also added athletic equipment collection in 2026.

Those categories have limits. For example, the Center accepts certain clean packing foam, but excludes foam food containers and packing peanuts. Check the accepted-items list for the particular item you’re bringing. “Plastic” or “Styrofoam” by itself isn’t enough information to decide where something belongs.

Keep drop-off recycling separate from your pickup calendar. For materials collected at home, use the town’s curbside recycling schedule and zone map.

Can I bring leaves without buying a yard-waste permit?

Yes. Westfield residents can drop off leaves without a permit during fall leaf season. The town also allows permit-free Christmas tree drop-off from January through March, with lights and decorations removed. These seasonal exceptions do not make all yard waste free. The Conservation Center FAQs explain the distinction.

If your load mixes leaves with branches or other debris, sort it before leaving home and check which permit applies to the other material. That small step can save you from unloading and sorting everything at the gate.

What should I check before loading the car?

  1. Identify the material. Check the accepted-items list, then choose the right disposal category.
  2. Check the vehicle rules. The town’s FAQs exclude commercial plates and certain dump-body vehicles; bulk-waste trips have additional vehicle limits.
  3. Buy any required permit online. Save your confirmation on your phone or print it. Bring proof of Westfield residency when claiming resident services.
  4. Load for easy unloading. Keep recyclable categories separate. Organic debris must be divided into grass, leaves and other debris; take your transporting bags and containers home afterward.
  5. Check that day’s hours. Allow enough time to arrive and unload before closing.

The town’s vehicle, sorting and permit FAQs are particularly helpful for an unusual load. For paint, chemicals or other potentially hazardous material, check Union County’s disposal programs before choosing a destination.

Who can help with a specific item or permit?

Call the Conservation Center at 908-789-4100, extension 4611, or contact DPW at dpw@westfieldnj.gov. Give them the item, approximate amount and vehicle type so they can advise you on the right service.

Good local services should be easy to use. If a process is confusing or you see a way the town could make it clearer, please share your feedback with me.
