Westfield Leaf Collection 2026: Schedule, Zones and Rules

Westfield, NJ’s 2026 regular leaf collection began October 26 in Zone 4 on the north side and Zone 9 on the south side. Two full passes are planned. Friday, December 4 is the last day to place leaves curbside; collection is expected to finish December 12, weather permitting.
Knowing your zone is useful. Knowing how the route moves is just as important. Westfield collects leaves in sequence, so the start of the program does not give every street its own fixed pickup date. This guide explains how to find your zone, prepare your leaves and plan around the final deadline.
Information checked October 30, 2026 against the Town’s 2026 leaf collection mailer and current collection page. Weather can change operations. Check Town updates before scheduling a final cleanup.
What is the Westfield leaf collection schedule for 2026?
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| Week of October 19 | Early collection in selected areas with heavy leaf volume. |
| October 26 | Regular collection starts in Zones 4 and 9. |
| Friday, December 4 | Final day to place leaves at the curb. |
| Saturday, December 12 | Anticipated end of curbside collection. |
The 2026 mailer distinguishes the placement deadline from the collection finish. Plan your last rake-out around December 4, even though crews expect to continue collecting afterward.
Does Westfield collect leaves on Saturdays?
Yes. The Town’s October 16 program announcement calls for six supplemental Saturday collections focused on school areas and roads with heavy weekday traffic. That is additional capacity for the program, rather than a weekly Saturday appointment for every property.
How do I find my Westfield leaf collection zone?
Use the official enlarged leaf collection zone map, which the Town links from its 2026 collection page. The file name contains “2021,” but it remains the map supplied for the current program. The 2026 mailer also includes the map.
Locate your street, then check the numbered area containing your address. Pay particular attention near a boundary: a long street can pass through more than one zone. The map shows Zones 1–5 on the north side of the railroad and Zones 6–10 on the south side.
| Area | Zones | 2026 starting zone |
|---|---|---|
| North side | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 | 4 |
| South side | 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 | 9 |
The Town says crews move to the next zone in numerical sequence after completing a zone. Leaf zones match the curbside recycling zones, but your recycling collection date is not your leaf pickup date. Use the leaf program’s updates to follow crew progress.
What day will crews reach my street?
The published plan gives starting zones and a sequence, rather than a guaranteed date for each address. Check the Town’s leaf collection page for current information. For Town-wide alerts, the Town’s notification instructions say to text 07090 to 888777 to subscribe to Nixle.
If you use a landscaper, send them your zone and the placement deadline now. Arrange the final cleanup with enough room to adjust if rain or a late leaf drop changes your plans.
How should I put leaves out for collection?
The Town’s collection guidelines call for leaves in a narrow row beside the curb, with a clear gutter for drainage and at least 10 feet of separation from stormwater inlets. Keep branches, grass, pumpkins, mums and other yard debris out. Mixed piles will not be collected.
Move your car off the street when crews are working in your zone, if possible. Never park on a leaf pile: the Fire Department warns that hot vehicle components can ignite leaves, including wet ones.
A useful final check is to walk the length of your pile before heading inside. Look for a branch hidden beneath the leaves, a blocked inlet or a pile spreading into a driveway. Those are easier to fix while the rake is still in your hand.
Does Westfield provide free leaf bags?
Yes. The Town provides up to 10 free leaf bags per household at the Conservation Center, with proof of residency and no permit required. Use biodegradable paper bags intended for leaves. Bagged leaves follow the same collection schedule as loose leaves, according to the 2026 mailer.
Bags can be a practical choice when you have a small amount to collect or limited curb space. Keep the contents leaves-only; putting mixed yard waste in a bag does not change the collection rules.
Where can I drop off leaves in Westfield?
Westfield residents can take leaves to the Conservation Center, 1300 Lamberts Mill Road, without a permit during leaf season. Bring proof of residency. Other organic debris has separate permit requirements.
For October 13–December 20, 2026, the Conservation Center calendar lists weekdays 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m.–3 p.m., with closures November 11 and November 26–27. Check for weather changes before driving over.
If you miss the curbside placement deadline, check available drop-off hours instead of adding a late pile to the street. My Conservation Center guide explains permits, sorting and other accepted materials.
Can I mulch leaves instead of putting them at the curb?
Yes. The Town’s leaf page describes mowing leaves into small pieces as another option, returning organic material to the lawn and reducing roadside piles. You can use more than one approach: mulch where appropriate, then bag or collect the remainder.
Keeping leaves out of drains also helps protect local waterways. Westfield’s Adopt-a-Drain program explains how residents can care for a nearby inlet and records the debris volunteers remove. Follow its safety instructions and report a problem requiring Town equipment through Westfield Connect.
